[SoU] Master Zaar (or, How I gained a newfound respect for monks)

Haven't finished SoU yet, but Master Zaar was unquestionably the most
difficult battle I've seen so far in the two official Bioware
Neverwinter Nights campaigns. Queen Morag? Only two tries needed. The
copper and silver dragons? A little tougher but still no problem,
because it was simple to duck through the portal to rest when
necessary. I finished the first official campaign as a 13/4
Paladin/Fighter and am now working thorugh SoU as a Sorcerer with one
level of Paladin, which is what let me do the miniquest in the first
place.

Zaar possesses stupendous regenerative powers, terrific spell
resistance (plus amazing reflexes that let him successfully evade most
of the spells he failed to resist) that let him laugh off the dozens
of fireballs, magic missiles, and fire arrows I lobbed his way, and
the ability to land a seemingly endless number of powerful blows per
turn ("Stunning Fist" is an accurate description!). The Holy Avenger
didn't help much because my character is so awful at melee combat that
only a few of my blows landed. (Tried giving the sword to my henchman
Dorna, but I guess you have to be a Paladin for it to be any more
effective than a regular longsword.)

After many, many dozens of attempts and numerous variations at
strategies, my henchman and I finially defeated Zaar with the help of
the panther familiar and a Summon Creature II dire badger. I buffed
everyone up with every single defensive spell I knew plus potions of
barkskin. I also used the two potions of speed and (perhaps most
important) the Giant Hand spell I fortunately had on hand. Even with
all that, victory was a close thing!

Well, yeah, he's a tough fight for a sorcerer with only one level of
paladin. I played through SoU as a pure paladin and nailed Zaar on the
second try. Of course, the first time in I didn't buff myself up
properly. Didn't make that mistake again--Bull's Strength, Eagle's
Splendor, Endurance, Barkskin, used Divine Might feat, Divine Favor
spell and a well-placed Smite Evil and he went down like the two-bit
pansy undead he is (was?).

I don't remember fighting a master Zaar in the game. Is he optional?

No, you will find him in a chamber in the northwest part of Kel-Garas' tomb.
He is not visible from the beginning, but spawns in when you walk into the
room.
