I admit my own ignorance. How in the NWN world do you make use of the
thieves tools?

Thanks!

You select the use action on it and then click on that pesky locked
door/chest/whatever, which your lockpick skill alone cannot open.

Best used by watching how much you missed the DC by, and selecting the
power of lockpick necessary to make it. (Since they're oddly one-use
items, might as well not waste the powerful ones.)

In order to use them you have to have some points in skill "Lock Pick".
Whenever you come across a lock you cannot pick, you can use Thieves Tools
(select item in inventory or quick slot and point to the object you want to
open) and its points will be added to your lock picking skill.

For example, you come across a lock with DC 35. Your Lock Pick skill is at
10. Even with 20 (automatically)+10 you wouldn't be able to open this
lock...But with Thieves Tools +6 (or bigger) your skill will be 20+10+6 and
presto voila, the lock opens.

Ps. There are very few locks that cannot be opened or broken otherwise...The
locks that usually cannot be opened or broken are pretty much all plot
specific and either require a special key or some other actions in order for
them to open.
